Random act of kindness

CarComm Coachworks Ltd, specialist commercial vehicle repairer in Ashford, Middlesex are delighted to share the completion of their latest passion project.

It’s a project that is close to the heart for many CarComm Coachworks employees, it’s a lot smaller vehicle than what the company are typically known for, but it is just as mighty.

Victoria Scholes, a postgrad in Surrey is disabled and needs a powerchair to get round due to having a Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

When Victoria was graduating back in 2018, her powerchair was showing many signs of wear and she was keen to refresh it in time for the graduation photos.

Victoria was aiming to spray paint the worst looking parts herself and was figuring out just how to do it when a chance discussion with a friend led Victoria to CarComm Coachworks.

From the first moment Jason Mole, MD of CarComm Coachworks and a father of two girls learned of Victoria’s condition and reasons for wanting to spruce up her powerchair, he knew that he had to help. He was also touched by her tireless campaigning to make Britain accessible for everyone regardless of disability, health need or learning difficulty.

Feeling incredibly grateful, Victoria said: “I was so touched by Jason’s generosity and everyone at CarComm Coachworks took such good care of me and my chair. They really went above and beyond every step of the way. From painting all of the metal parts vibrant pink, (my absolute favourite colour) to adding personalised colour features all the way down to the little pink dots on the wheels. Plus they even repaired some of the wobbly and worn out bits, which I didn’t expect at all!”

“Ever since 2018, everywhere I go I have people stopping and commenting how much they like my chair. It is like an icebreaker and really gets the conversation going. It has made such an enormous difference to my life, my confidence and my campaigning too.”

Victoria is graduating from her master’s degree in professional legal Practice this year and she really wanted to bring her chair back to CarComm as after 5 years of daily use it really was not up for the new set of graduation photographs! So after saving up a fair bit of the money Victoria brought it back to CarComm Coachworks.

However in true Jason’s style, the chair was booked in without charge to be refurbished throughout. This included adding some strengthening agent on all the plastic bits so they won’t break so easily in the future.

Victoria recently attended the BBC for Accessibility Day and was front and centre in the group photo, with her chair being the centre of attention yet again. It really stood out in all the photos and made Victoria feel great!

“Your wheelchair – you are in it for life. It’s your personality. And CarComm really taken such pride and gone above and beyond! Thank you – concluded Victoria.
